We made a quick getaway to Stockholm, our neighbouring capital. Because the journey was a day in Stockholm cruise, we had time only for a delicious lunch and for one attraction after that. We decided to try Stockholm SkyView next to Avicii Arena. The arena itself is famous for hosting big events and SkyView which is just on the same location provided us a memorable ride onto the top of it. Read more about our SkyView experience.

What is SkyView?

Stockholm SkyView is a world-class attraction that takes you on a panoramic tour of the city. It uses two specially designed glass gondolas that travel along the outside of the Avicii Arena. The arena itself is an attraction since it is the world's largest spherical building. The gondolas drive on the tracks built on the building and reach 130 metres above sea level giving a panoramic view over the Stockholm area. Stockholm SkyView has similarities to TV towers in many city capitals but it is more exciting.

Avicii Arena
SkyView has two gondolas ascending on top of the Avicii Arena where you get a view of the Stockholm skyline and beautiful views.

At the top of the arena, a visitor has a clear view of Stockholm.

Location

SkyView is in Stockholm, Sweden in the district of Johanneshov. The exact address is Globentorget 2. The easiest way to reach SkyView is to take a metro (tunnelbana in Swedish) to the Globen station. The journey from the city centre takes about 15 minutes and a ticket can easily be purchased through the SL app.

Avicii Arena was formerly named as Globen. It was built in 1989 and SkyView was opened in 2010.

Opening Times

Currently, SkyView is open throughout the week, from Monday to Sunday. During the summer season (15 July - 27 August), it is open from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. In the autumn season (28 August - 30 September), the attraction closes earlier already at 4:00 pm and is closed on Sundays. Remember to pre-book a ticket to be sure that the attraction is open during your visit.

Our SkyView Experience

We visit Stockholm now and then because it is easily reachable by ferry from Helsinki. Usually, we travel to Stockholm in the winter but this time, we made the trip in August. The weather in Stockholm was warm but a little cloudy. In Scandinavia, it is difficult to forecast the weather as it can change quickly during the day or every other day.

Our Day in Stockholm Cruise granted us six hours to spend in Stockholm. The plan was first to taste the culinary wonders of restaurant Oxenstiernan, nestled in the heart of Östermalm. This establishment was recommended by American Express. True to its reputation, the restaurant did not disappoint us. We were treated to delectable dishes at a surprisingly reasonable price.

After the tasty lunch, we yearned for fresh experiences in Stockholm, thus guiding our steps towards SkyView.

Booking

To ensure you don't miss out on the breathtaking experience of SkyView, booking your gondola ride in advance is essential like we did. There is only space for 16 people in a single gondola. We highly recommend using GetYourGuide, a trusted global attractions booking site. With a simple and secure online payment process, it's convenient to secure a spot. When booking, remember to select your preferred time slot for the visit. To make the most of your visit, we suggest arriving early to ensure you have enough time to locate the departure point and soak in the anticipation of this incredible journey.

After we had booked the tour, we were in a hurry to reach Globen in time.

Our SkyView tickets cost about 15 euros/person which is a moderate price in Stockholm. The exact price depends on the season and the currency rate. If you are visiting Sweden or anywhere abroad where your bank card's currency is different from that of your destination, we recommend paying by Curve Card or Wise to keep currency conversion costs low .

Arrival

We arrived at Globen 30 minutes before the booked time. It was simple to reach the Globen Tunnelbana station which was just next to Avicii Arena. From the station, it took only 5 minutes to walk to the SkyView office marked by a clear sign on the roof.

SkyView Entrance
The SkyView entrance was easy to spot.

Next to SkyView, there was a mall where you could eat, do shopping or spend your extra time.

Avicii Arena
When we reached the arena, we understood how huge it was.

SkyView Office and Shop

There was a booking office and a small shop at Skyview. Rides start from the same office so you can wait for your turn inside if the weather outside is cold or rainy. Before our ride, the atmosphere inside was peaceful and there were only a few people.

Introduction Movie

When it was our turn for the ride, the staff efficiently checked tickets and guided us together with the other guests to a small movie room. The film showcased the history of Avicii Arena and the other arenas nearby. Despite its brevity, the movie succeeded in delivering a wealth of information without becoming dull. It was thoughtfully presented in Swedish with English subtitles, ensuring that the majority of the guests could fully appreciate the content.

Ride

After enjoying the 5-minute introduction movie, it was time for the real adventure: the gondola ride. Surprisingly, the gondola was located just a few steps away from the movie room still inside the building.

SkyView gondola
SkyView gondola was a closed space with a pleasant temperature inside.

As the gondola prepared to depart, the roof door of the building opened, and it started its vertical ascent on the track. Slowly but steadily, the gondola climbed higher and higher, taking us up to the sphere of the magnificent Avicii Arena. The height of the arena took us by surprise, leaving us in awe as we reached the top. From this vantage point, we were treated to a breathtaking view of the entire area and the beautiful cityscape of Stockholm. However, it is good to understand that Nordic capitals are sparsely built so you see more nature than crowded streets or high buildings.

Avicii Arena and SkyView Gondolas
SkyView has been operating safely for more than 10 years taking people to the top of the Avicii Arena.

The gondola itself was similar to one used in the London Eye. It was a closed structure, providing a comfortable temperature inside. There was ample space for passengers, with a few seating areas available as well. A fire extinguisher and an emergency phone were available inside the gondolas.

Ascending gondola
The gondola ascended first vertically and then reached the top of the arena in a few minutes.

After a few minutes spent on the top, the gondola descended back. The whole ride took 16 minutes.

Safety

Individuals with acrophobia or discomfort in enclosed spaces are advised to avoid the SkyView experience. The ascent and descent may trigger feelings of fear or unease. However, it is worth noting that we felt secure and at ease throughout our time inside SkyView.

Tracks down
If you have a fear of elevators or high places, SkyView is not an attraction for you.

SkyView follows strict safety protocols to ensure the well-being of its visitors. The glass gondolas are built with high-quality materials and undergo regular maintenance checks to ensure their safety and functionality. Additionally, the attraction complies with all relevant safety regulations and guidelines.

Why to Visit Skyview

There are several compelling reasons to visit SkyView. Firstly, it boasts the Avicii Arena, the world's largest spherical building. The opportunity to access the roof of any arena is a rare and unique experience in itself. Additionally, one of the standout features of SkyView is its affordability, making it an accessible attraction for all. So, whether you're a fan of architecture, seeking an unforgettable experience, or simply looking for a budget-friendly outing, SkyView is the perfect choice.

Bottom Line

There is a lot to see in Stockholm. If you are looking for a sightseeing tower, we recommend visiting Stockholm SkyView instead. It provides a nice view over Stockholm and the ride itself is exciting. At the same time, you will see Avicii Arena which is a world-famous building. After the experience, there is a shopping mall next to the arena and you can enjoy lunch there and go shopping.

The ride is short but well-arranged. The introduction movie provides background information and after that, you can experience the ride. If you are lucky, there are not many other customers so there is plenty of space inside the gondola.
