EU Roaming Charges Disappeared or Decreased

We would like to remind our dear Finland-based readers that there won't be mobile roaming charges anymore or they will be cheaper starting from June 15th 2017. It means using your phone inside the whole EU will be charged with the same prices as in your home country or only a small supplement will be charged. Free or cheap, that depends on your mobile operator. Some operators have applied a special permission to charge a supplement even though roaming should be totally free.

However, we also want to remind that the exact prices depends on your mobile operator subscription. Not all plans are equal. Some of them are more expensive but cheaper options are also available. Not all subscriptions include free roaming (because of operators' special permission) but small roaming charges will be asked. Some prepaid subscriptions may not even work abroad at all. So we suggest you to change to a (cheap) post paid plan if you are living in Finland. Compare the prices and think if you need totally free roaming or are you ready to pay a little to get cheaper monthly fee. You may notice that your phone bill drops while comparing prices between prepaid and postpaid plans.

How Much Is It Allowed to Use Data Abroad?

Even though the roaming will be free for some mobile subscriptions, it won't be for unlimited use. For example, you are not allowed to buy a Finnish mobile subscription and then use it abroad more than you normally use in Finland. Roaming is meant to be free only for travelers. It is a little unclear what the limits are but they should be enough for a normal usage a traveler would need. The operator will contact you if they notice you misusing the system.

Which Plan Would Be a Good for Me?

The best plan type depends on your needs. Perhaps you require more data usage while outside your home or hotel. We suggest you to try this subscription comparison tool* to find the best plan for you. By taking little time to fill up the form, the tool will generate the best and cheapest option according to your specific needs. Using such tool, you would be avoiding operators to oversell plans more than what you really need.
